The hose is a soft-walled, smooth, black, SBR rubber cylinder with an EPDM cover that is weather and ozone resistant. The hoses were on display at the Industrial Technology Show in Chicago last week.

Modern mining equipment includes mine air hoses. They are used to transfer compressed air to different machines at high pressures, and they also help to remove methane gas from the underground environment.
Miners can be exposed to danger if hoses are not properly installed. For example, a large-diameter hose that ruptured in a mine accident killed an exploration driller’s assistant.
To prevent this from happening, restraining safety clamps must be correctly placed around yellow marker bands marked “Safety Clamp Here.” To prevent whipping, safety devices such as an air fuse or whip-inhibiting should be installed downstream of the hose coupling.
Moreover, the ventilation plan approved by a district manager must be customized for each mine. The ventilation plan must include a time delay that allows alert or alarm levels to exist for a specified period of time before the surface location acknowledges that an alert or alarm signal is actually received.
The new rules will not affect pre-Coal Act mines that use belt air to ventilate working places or setup or removal areas that develop using three or more entries, if they meet the requirements of this final rule. If they do not, then the ventilation plans they have adopted to date will no longer protect miners from fires.
Media transported by mine air hoses
Mining hoses can be used to transport various media within the mine. They include water/alkali, bulk powder, slurry and gaseous media like compressed air, propane acetylene, oxygen and butane/propane mix.
The mine air hose application range is large and covers a broad variety of equipment and machines. In particular, it includes hoses used for blasting and drilling equipment, roof support shields, monorail systems and more.
A major factor in determining which hose is best for a given application is the media that will be conveyed. It is important to consider the chemical resistance of the hose material and what type of fluid or gas it will be carrying.
For example, an air hose that is used for pneumatic mining and drilling applications should have an oil and abrasion resistant cover. It should also be compatible to the o-rings, valves, and other fittings of its components in order to function properly.
Another factor is the pressure rating of the hose. It should be capable of handling the maximum system pressure as well as any surge and peak transient pressures in the system.
A hose that has been rated to withstand a pressure of over 4,000 psi is likely to be a suitable choice. To minimize damage from equipment structures, it should have a large bend radius.
