Maintenance technicians and plant managers must consider the material, construction type, end connectors, and application of hoses. They also need to monitor hose performance regularly to determine whether replacement is necessary.

When sizing a pipe, it is important to consider the distance between the end points as well as the pressure loss that will occur when the hose is being used. This is due to friction between the fluid’s inner surface and the hose’s length.
The hose’s inner diameter (I.D. is the measurement of the straight distance between the two furthest points of the hose’s inner surface, and it is usually designated in inches or fractions of an inch. Metric sizing may be offered as well, but is not always necessary to meet exact specifications.

Another effect is heat aging, caused by running hoses through high temperature areas and over long periods of time. This condition can cause a hose’s flexibility to lose and stiffen up, which can lead to a burst pipe or leak.

Fluorocarbon, nitrile rubber and fluoropolymer are the main raw materials for large-diameter petroleum hose. The nitrile rubber, Buna-N, is the most common type of hose for phosphate ester base hydraulic fluid (Skydrol(tm)).
Neoprene is also a synthetic rubber compound that is similar to Buna-N and has good resistance to petroleum products. This is the best material for use with phosphate ester base hydraulic fluid (Skydrol(tm)).
Polytetrafluoroethylene, or PTFE, is another commonly used fluoroplastic chemical, which has carbon atoms shielded by fluorine atoms. This gives PTFE strong inter-atomic bonds, which give it chemical inertness.
Various other materials are also used to make large diameter petroleum hose. The hose reel must be made of corrosion-resistant, durable and temperature-resistant materials for use in toxic environments.
The customer can specify a variety of specifications. Some of these include the size, ends and intended application.
Pressure: The hose must be able to withstand any pressure it is intended to. This is especially important when the application requires pressure changes or surge pressures.
Delivery: The hose should be delivered to the customer at the specified date. This ensures that the hose is in good condition and does not need to be repaired before it can be used.
